Spider Veins

What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are enlargements of tiny blood vessels. They can be flat, raised, red or blue. Spider veins can form anywhere on the body, but they are most commonly found on the thighs, legs, and ankles.

What Causes Spider Veins?

No one knows for certain what causes spider veins but some families have a greater tendency for this condition. Traumatic injuries and long periods of sitting or standing could all contribute to the formation of spider veins. Birth control pills and pregnancy may worsen spider veins. Wearing support hose, reducing excessive weight and regular exercise may help to prevent spider veins.

Sclerotherapy for Spider Veins

In sclerotherapy, the tiny vessels are injected with a very tiny needle. The solution irritates and destroys the lining of the blood vessels making them clot off, this may cause bruising. The closed vessels and the bruises are gradually dissolved by the body. The treatment of spider veins in the legs often requires several series of injections. The number of injections will depend on how many veins need to be treated and how well each one goes. The patient will wear compression stockings over the next 72 hours. The injection sites may hurt mildly or just cause a bit of discomfort, this will go away quickly. The biggest thing to remember is that your legs will look worse before they look better.

Herbal Treatment for Spider Veins

Advances in scientific investigations have helped to make herbal treatments a more promising source of treatment for spider veins.  Natural supplements or herbal treatments aim more to helping the root cause of the vein conditions, i.e. weak vein valves and walls.  Some of the herbal treatments for improving spider veins are: The Japanese Pagoda Tree,  Horse Chestnut, Butcher’s Broom, Grape Seed Extract, and Vitamin K.

Acid Reflux Disease

What is Acid Reflux Disease?

Acid Reflux Disease (GERD) is a condition in which the esophagus becomes inflamed or irritated because there is acid backing up from the stomach. When food is swallowed it travels down the esophagus (aka the food pipe) that stretches from the throat to the stomach.

What are the symptoms of Acid Reflux Disease?

Persistent heartburn is the most common symptom. Heartburn is a burning pain in the center of one’s chest, behind the breastbone. The pain can last as long as 2 hours. Heartburn is usually worse after eating. Not everyone that has acid reflux disease has heartburn. Other symptoms include a regurgitation of bitter acid up into the throat while sleeping or bending over. A bitter taste in the mouth, a persistent dry cough, hoarseness, wheezing, or a feeling of tightness in the throat as if a piece of food were stuck in it are also symptoms.

What are the causes of Acid Reflux Disease?

No one knows the exact causes of acid reflux disease, but there are many contributing factors that can weaken or relax the lower esophageal sphincter, making the reflux worse. A few of the factors include the use of alcohol or cigarettes, obesity, poor posture. Eating fatty and fried foods, chocolate, garlic and onions, drinks with caffeine, acidic foods such as citrus fruits are also large contributing factors. Eating large meals before bedtime or medical conditions such as pregnancy or diabetes can cause acid reflux disease symptoms to worsen.

Self-Care Treatments for Acid Reflux Disease

Many people can relieve their symptoms by just making a few changes to their habits and lifestyle. A few things to try are to not eat at least 3 hours before bedtime, don’t lie down right after eating at any time of the day. Elevating the head of your bed can help and try to avoid eating large meals in general, instead eat smaller, more frequent meals. Also, try as much as possible to avoid alcohol, stop smoking, lose excess weight and sit or stand up straight are all things that can help cure or at least improve your acid reflux disease. Antacids are self-care treatments for if you already have heartburn, they usually take about an hour to relieve the symptoms though.
